Please remember to honor and support the science of Counseling Psychology by attending the Best in Science Address at the APA Convention in August on Saturday, August 6th from 10am to 10:50 am in Room 709 of the Denver Convention Center. This year we will be honoring an early career psychologist who has made a significant contribution to the science of Counseling Psychology, namely, Dr. Mindi Thompson from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She will be giving this year’s address titled “Social Class: Interrogating its Meaning and Considering Future Directions.” Her cutting edge scholarship within vocational psychology on issues of social class and classism uses both qualitative and quantitative methodologies while encompassing the core values and foundations of Counseling Psychology. It is with great pleasure that the advisory board members (Erin Hardin, G.E. Kawika Allen, Frank Dillon, Brandy Piña-Watson, and Sherry Wang) and I continue to work diligently on representing, promoting, and advocating for the science of Counseling Psychology. First and foremost, we are focused on implementing priorities identified at the SCP mid-winter meeting, namely promoting research on Counseling Psychology training competencies and providing support and guidance as counseling psychologists apply for and secure research grant funding.For example, together, the advisory board is in the process of offering a webinar where a panel of counseling psychologists who have been grant reviewers for private foundations and/or federal agencies will speak about what they have learned about submitting successful grants. While initially conceived as an APA panel discussion, a webinar seems like the best option to reach a large community of counseling psychologists and trainees (some of which may not travel to the APA convention). Please be watch for future announcements about this webinar in early Fall.
