Section on the Advancement of Women – Summer 2015Another academic year has come to a close and a window into planning for SAW-sponsored events at convention reveals several wonderful opportunities to showcase the excellent work of many of our colleagues and students, as well as time-honored traditions like the SAW Woman of the Year address.
At the Division 17 Social Hour on Thursday, August 6th from 5:00-6:00PM in the Fairmount Royal York Hotel Ballroom, we will be delighted to highlight graduate students’ research related to the advancement of women. Our Student Poster Coordinator, Dr. Sarah Hastings, and her team of reviewers, did an outstanding job evaluating this year’s submissions. Our annual SAW Champagne Breakfast and Business Meeting will be held on Friday, August 7th from 8:00-10:00AM in the Northern Lights Ballroom at the Renaissance Toronto Downtown Hotel where we’ll announce the 2015 SAW Woman of the Year, celebrate award winners and recently elected SAW Executive Board members, conduct regular section business, and enjoy each other’s company in a welcoming and supportive environment. We especially encourage students, early career professionals, and anyone else whose interest in SAW is piqued to come join us. In keeping with our longstanding tradition, we invite you to stay following our breakfast and business meeting to honor our 2014 SAW Woman of the Year, Dr. Bianca Bernstein, who will deliver what promises to be an inspirational talk.
Two programming events with SAW sponsorship bear particular mention. First, Dr. Laurel Watson, current SAW Membership Chair and recently-designated SAW Chair-Elect, and I will be co-facilitating a roundtable discussion entitled “A Mentorship Event for Women Interested in Academia,” to be held on Thursday, August 6th from 3:00-3:50PM at the Convention Centre, 105 Constitution Hall. In addition, along with colleagues from the Division 17 Vocational Psychology, International, and Health Psychology sections, SAW will be collaborating to present a joint symposium entitled, “Women’s Work Issues in International Health and Economic Contexts,” scheduled for Friday, August 7th from 9:00-9:50AM in Convention Centre Room 205C.
In other SAW news, we are pleased to share with you the 2015 winner of the SAW Student Research Award. Janelle Maloch, a doctoral candidate in the Counseling Psychology program at Pennsylvania State University, received $200 in support of her dissertation, entitled “Women’s Perspectives and Experiences in Passionate Friendships.” This qualitative study seeks to develop an understanding and model of women’s passionate friendship experiences and how that may allow sexual orientation exploration to occur. Her study includes diverse young adult women across sexual identities. I am indebted to Dr. Ginny Maril and her team of reviewers for overseeing the evaluation of nominees and determining Janelle as this year’s winner.
The SAW Herstory Taskforce–Jennifer Taylor, Jennifer Mootz, Lisa De La Rue, and Morgan Grotewiel— finalized their questions to be explored and developed a detailed IRB proposal for their upcoming pilot and Delphi studies. The IRB protocol was submitted in early May and they are currently waiting for approval from the IRB at West Virginia University and will gain collaborative approval to conduct the study at the institutions where other committee members are affiliated. Their plan is to collect data later this summer and analyze the data in the fall, in anticipation of submitting the results to be presented at the 2016 APA convention in Denver. Thanks to each member for their ongoing hard work and dedication to this meaningful project.
