Sandra L. Shullman receives 2016 American Psychological Foundation (APF) Gold Medal Award for Life Achievement in the Practice of Psychology

On behalf of the Division 17 APA and Other Organization Awards Committee I am pleased to announce that our esteemed colleague, Sandy L. Shullman Ph.D., was awarded the American Psychological Foundation (APF) 2016 Gold Medal Award for Life Achievement in the Practice of Psychology. The award recognizes a distinguished career and enduring contribution to advancing the professional practice of psychology through a demonstrable effect on patterns of service delivery in the profession.

Sandra L. Shullman, PhD, Managing Partner, Columbus Office, is internationally known in leadership and executive assessment and development and manages large and long-term corporate clients for the firm.  Sandy teaches leadership in the HEC School of Business for their EMBA and MBA programs in Paris, Doha and Beijing, and also serves as faculty for the Duke University Fuqua Business School Global Learning Network.

She is the co-author of Performance Appraisal on the Line, a groundbreaking book on performance evaluation, and has written articles and book chapters on a number of organizational performance issues, including foundational work on harassment and hostile work environments.  Her most recent publications have focused on leadership in ambiguous and uncertain circumstances and the emerging challenges of global leaders.

Sandy holds a bachelor’s degree (mathematics) from Dickinson College, a master’s degree from Harvard University and her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Ohio State University.  Previously she taught in the Kent State University Diversity Management Program and lectured and facilitated leadership development programs for over fifteen years at the John Glenn School of Public Management at The Ohio State University.  In previous work roles, she served for seventeen years as president of a regional behavioral healthcare organization, following several years as Director of Managerial Effectiveness Programs for the Center for Creative Leadership, where she worked with numerous research projects and leadership development programs.

Sandy currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the American Psychological Association and previously as a member of the Board of Directors for the American Psychological Foundation.  She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and chaired its original APA Workgroup on Executive Coaching.  Sandy is the current Chair of the APA Leadership Institute for Women in Psychology. She is also a faculty member for the Division 17 Leadership Academy, the Ohio Psychological Association Leadership Development Academy, and the Division 31 Diversity Leadership Program.

Sandy also co-chaired the Council of Representatives Work Group on the APA Multicultural Guidelines, chaired the APA Task Force on the World Congress against Racism Report, chaired the BEA/CIRP Task Force on APA’s Role in International Quality Assurance, chaired the APA Board of Professional Affairs, and served as a member of the Committee on Women in Psychology, BAPPI, and the Policy and Planning Board.   She was a member of the Council of Representatives Strategic Planning Advisory Committee and has held Board level positions in the Divisions of Counseling Psychology, Consulting Psychology and Independent Practice.  She has been involved with Divisions 1, 13, 14, 17, 31, 35, 42, 44, and 45 for many years. She is a Past President of the Ohio Psychological Association.   Sandy recently chaired the APA Good Governance Project, a strategic initiative designed to help APA align its governance structure effectively with APA’s strategic plan.

The prestigious 2016 Gold Medal award is not the first time Sandy’s outstanding accomplishments have been recognized by a national organization. Sandy was awarded the American Psychological Association’s 2012 Elizabeth Hurlock Beckman Award for Excellence in Education and Inspirational Leadership. She was also honored by the Association in 2012 with the APA Award for Distinguished Contributions to Professional Practice for her organizational and leadership work.

Announcement of the 2016 Gold Medal award, along with a citation and full biography of Sandy Shullman, Ph.D. will appear in the upcoming Awards issue of the American Psychologist.  Dr. Shullman will be presented with the APF Gold Medal Award at the APA Annual Convention in Denver, CO on August 6, 2016 from 4 pm – 6 pm.
