On a regular basis you have been receiving information from me through newsletter articles and emails regarding upcoming opportunities to nominate your peers from the Division for various awards within APA and other professional organizations.

Below you will find information on some specific awards coming due this fall.  Brief details on award criteria and requirements are also listed. Please consider nominating members of Division 17 for these and other awards throughout the year. This is one way that we can demonstrate and publicize all of the outstanding scholarly and clinical work being done by counseling psychologists. Note that several student awards are included.

Deadline Date: December 1, 2015
Name of Award: Gold Medal Award for Life Achievement in the Application of Psychology
Type of Award: American Psychological Foundation

Criteria/Notes: These awards recognize a psychologist, aged 65 or older and residing in North America, with a distinguished career and enduring contribution in one of the following areas:

Ø  Gold Medal Award for Life Achievement in the Science of Psychology recognizes a distinguished career and enduring contribution to advancing psychological science.

Ø  Gold Medal Award for Life Achievement in the Application of Psychology recognizes a distinguished career and enduring contribution to advancing the application of psychology through methods, research, and/or application of psychological techniques to important practical problems.

Ø  Gold Medal Award for Life Achievement by a Psychologist in the Public Interest recognizes a distinguished career and enduring contribution to the application of psychology in the public interest.

Ø  Gold Medal Award for Life Achievement in the Practice of Psychology recognizes a distinguished career and enduring contribution to advancing the professional practice of psychology through a demonstrable effect on patterns of service delivery in the profession.

The recipient receives a mounted gold medal and an all-expense paid trip to the APA annual convention where the award is presented.  Applications must include the following materials: nomination statement outlining the nominee’s record of contributions, current vitae, letters of recommendation from professionals and colleagues. Name of Award: Charles L. Brewer Distinguished Teaching of Psychology Award
Type of Award: American Psychological Foundation

Criteria/Notes: This award recognizes a psychologist with significant career contributions and a record of being an exceptional teacher of psychology. The award is in the amount of $2,000, plus an all-expense paid trip to the APA annual convention where the award is presented.  Applications must include the following materials: nomination statement describing nominee’s commitment to teaching, nominee’s current CV, and up to 10 letters of recommendation from colleagues, administrators, and former students.

Name of Award: Early Graduate Student Researcher Awards (Student award)
Type of Award: APA, Science Directorate

Criteria/Notes:  The purpose of the Early Graduate Student Researcher Awards program is to recognize students for conducting outstanding research early in their graduate training (i.e., research conducted within the first two years of doctoral study). The award focuses on both the student’s general research experience and specific completed research projects. The research independence of the applicant as well as the novelty and implications of research performed as a graduate student will be used for evaluation purposes. Therefore preference may be given to students who have completed their second year of doctoral studies.  See the website for further details and application instructions.

Name of Award: APA Dissertation Research Awards (Student Award)
Type of Award: APA, Science Directorate

Criteria/Notes:
Assists doctoral students with dissertation research expenses. Applies to any area of research within psychology. Approximately 30-40 grants are awarded ($1,000 each), and several are awarded up to $5,000. Applicants must be full-time graduate students in the United States or Canada who are working on dissertation research. Dissertation proposals must have already been approved by their dissertation committee prior to application. Applicants who have already defended their dissertations are eligible to apply for funds as long as they have not yet received a doctoral degree as of the application deadline. Must be student affiliates or associate member of APA (or apply for affiliation along with application materials). Each psychology department may endorse only three applications. Must have not previously received an APA Dissertation Award.  See the website for further details and application instructions.

Name of Award: James McKeen Fellow Award

Criteria/ Notes:
The James McKeen Cattell Fellow Award recognizes APS Members for a lifetime of outstanding contributions to the area of applied psychological research. Recipients must be APS Members whose research addresses a critical problem in society at large. Honorees are recognized annually at the APS Convention. To nominate a candidate for the James McKeen Cattell Fellow Award, please fill out the online nomination form, or submit the materials electronically to the APS James McKeen Cattell Fellow Award Committee. Name of Award: Janet Taylor Spence Award For Early Career Contributions
Type of Award: APS

Criteria/ Notes:
The APS Janet Taylor Spence Award was established to recognize transformative early career contributions to psychological science. Nominees must be members of the Association for Psychological Science and must have completed their PhD within eight years of the date of the annual meeting at which the award would be conferred.  Research contributions can be transformative in various ways, such as the establishment of new approaches or paradigms within a field of psychology, or the development or advancement of research that cuts across fields of psychological science. The common thread is that Award winners should reflect the best of the many new and cutting edge ideas coming out of our most creative and promising investigators who, together, embody the future of psychological science.  Selection criteria include: (1) is the research novel and creative? (2) does the research have the potential to change how we think about psychological science? (3) is the research characterized by rigorous and innovative scientific methods? (4) does the research build upon existing psychological science in scholarly ways? (5) is the research influencing multiple fields of psychological science? Name of Award: Roy Scrivner Memorial Research Grants (Student award)
Type of Award: American Psychological Foundation

Criteria/Notes:
These grants support empirical and applied research focused on lesbian, gay and bisexual family psychology, and lesbian, gay and bisexual family therapy. Eligibility Requirements include: Advanced graduate student, in good standing, endorsed by supervising professor; Demonstrated commitment to LGBT family issues; IRB approval must be received from host institution before funding can be awarded if human participants are involved.
