New Editor for The Counseling Psychologist Journal

As you may be aware, Lydia Buki’s term as Editor of The Counseling Psychologist journal will be ending in 2019. She has done an amazing job with the journal and we thank her for her service. With the ending of her term, a search committee, chaired by Kathy Bieschke to select a new editor for TCP. The committee members were Will Liu, Bonnie Morardi, Michael Mobley, and Rachel Navarro. We are delighted to inform you that Bryan Kim will be the new incoming editor, starting his term in August 2018. Bryan brings significant expertise to lead this important Journal. Please join me in thanking the search committee for an excellent job done and in welcoming Bryan Kim to this position. More on Bryan follows below.

Bryan S. K. Kim is a Professor in the Department of Psychology and the Director of MA Program in Counseling Psychology (Specialization: Clinical Mental Health Counseling) at the University of Hawai’i at Hilo. He earned his Ph.D. in Counseling/Clinical/School Psychology (Emphasis: Counseling Psychology) under the mentorship of Professor Donald R. Atkinson at the University of California at Santa Barbara. Previous to joining UH Hilo in 2006, Bryan was a tenured Associate Professor at UC Santa Barbara, and prior to UCSB, a tenure-track Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland. He taught in the counseling psychology doctoral programs at UCSB and U of M. Bryan is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Divisions 17, 29, and 45), Asian American Psychological Association, and International Academy of Intercultural Research. He received several research and career awards including the Fritz and Linn Kuder Early Career Scientist/Practitioner Award from the Society of Counseling Psychology in 2006.

Bryan’s research focuses on multicultural counseling psychology, psychotherapy process and outcome, counselor training, and measurement of culture-specific constructs. He currently has over 80 publications, which include nine psychological instruments. Bryan’s interest in multicultural counseling psychology largely stems from his experiences growing up in Honolulu, Hawai’i as a child immigrant from South Korea.

Bryan is the current Editor of Asian American Journal of Psychology and Associate Editor of Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development. Bryan served as Associate Editor of The Counseling Psychologist from 2007 to 2013 and Associate Editor of Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology from 2007 to 2009. Bryan also currently serves as an editorial board member of Journal of Counseling Psychology, Journal of Counseling and Development, Journal of Asia Pacific Counseling, and Korean Journal of Counseling and Psychotherapy.
