Leadership Academy – Summer 2016 Announcements

Division 17 Leadership Academy fellows are doing amazing work in psychology leadership!

Carlton Green was awarded the 2016 Association for Counseling Center Training Agencies (ACCTA) Diversity Mentorship Scholarship. As part of this well-deserved honor, he will be presenting at the annual ACCTA conference in September.

Amber Hewitt was selected as the American Psychology Foundation’s Jacqueline Goldman Fellow.  The goal of the fellowship is to influence policy that affects the psychological development of children, contribute to the more effective use of psychological knowledge in government, and broaden awareness about the value of psychology-government interaction among psychologists and within the federal government.

Heidi Hutman along with her co-authors received the Outstanding Publication Award from the Division 17 Supervision and Training Section for her article on “Reducing supervisee anxiety” published in the Journal of Counseling Psychology.  She was also named as the Council of Counseling Psychology Training Programs Outstanding Graduate Student Award winner. 

Femina Varghese was appointed to the APA Committee on Professional Practice and Standards (COPPS), which, among other duties, is responsible for developing and recommending guidelines and standards for the Board of Professional Affairs. 

David Zelaya received the Division 17 SAS Social Justice Award and was awarded the prestigious APA Minority Fellowship Program’s Predoctoral Fellowship, funded through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Leadership Academy Faculty are continuing their legacy as well:

Barry Chung was named the winner of the Division 17 International Section’s Excellent Contributions Award, in part for his contributions to international collaboration in his leadership roles such as the National Career Development Association and SCP. He also engages in international consultation and training, and produces scholarship on international LGBT psychology.

Julia Phillips was named as the Woman of the Year by the Division 17 Section for the Advancement of Women.  She has been recognized for her many accomplishments, including APA fellow status in 2007, the 2013 Outstanding Training Director by the SCP Supervision and Training Section, and will begin a term as President-Elect Designate for the Council of Counseling Psychology Training Programs (CCPTP).

Sandy Shullman was announced as the Division 17 Leona Tyler Award winner, the highest and most prestigious award given by SCP. Sandy will be making her Leona Tyler Award Address at next year’s APA convention.  She also received the APA Gold Medal Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Practice of Psychology during the APA Awards Ceremony.

APA 2011 president, Melba Vasquez, was the 2015 recipient of the Leona Tyler Award and she delivered an outstanding address at the 2016 convention: “Mujerista Leadership in the Service of Social Justice”.  Her presentation can be found on our website.
