Kathryn Norsworthy, PhD. wins the APA 2017 International Humanitarian Award

On behalf of the Division 17 APA and Other Organization Awards Committee I am pleased to announce that our esteemed colleague, Kathryn L. Norsworthy, Ph.D., was awarded the American Psychological Association (APA) 2017 International Humanitarian Award. The award recognizes sustained and enduring humanitarian services to underserved populations.

Kathryn L. Norsworthy is an activist academic and professor of Graduate Studies in Counseling at Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida.  She has spent the last 20 years working in solidarity with local colleagues in conducting activist research and feminist-liberation practice projects in South and Southeast Asia, focusing on such issues as trauma-informed peacebuilding in areas of ethno-political conflict, violence against women, HIV-AIDS, refugee women’s participation in the Burma democracy movement, culture-centered post-tsunami response efforts, and LGBTQ+ social movement building.  Along with her colleagues from Thailand, she has been collaborating in Thai women’s reclamation of Buddhist wisdom in healing and trauma recovery. At home in central Florida, for the last 15 years she has been immersed in LGBTQ+ civil rights and social justice/solidarity projects with the farmworker and migrant communities.
