International Section – July 2016

Our Section Board and Committees are preparing a number of meetings and presentations at the upcoming APA Convention in Denver.

August 4, 2016

8-10am: We will host our annual International Scholars Welcome & Orientation Breakfast to greet international scholars and attendees. During this meeting, we will announce the winners of our 2016 awards and the election results for the positions of International Mentoring & Orientation Committee (IMOC) Chair, Treasurer, and Non-U.S.-based Membership Officer.

10am-noon: Our IMOC will hold the annual Roundtable discussions for international students in Counseling Psychology on the following topics: (1) Exploring academic career path and research publication in U.S.; (2) Clinical path, career options, and visa considerations; (3) Applying for internship; and (4) Exploring jobs outside US and processing emotions.

Noon-1pm: We will sponsor and co-sponsor the following Roundtables with the Supervision & Training Section and Section for the Independent Practice: (1) Clinical supervision of international students: Best practice and challenges (2) Addressing harmful and inadequate clinical supervision: International considerations; (3) Best practice in working with international trainees from multiple perspectives; (4) Bicultural identity of international psychologists in supervising U.S. and international students; (5) Training international trainees to supervise; and (6) International psychologists and independent practice: A primer. 

Noon-1pm: We will deliver a symposium on “Global collaboration and leadership: Tales fromthe trenches” with leaders of Taiwan Psychology Network, Korean Psychology Network, and Association of Chinese Helping Professionals and Psychologists – International.

2-3pm: We will sponsor a symposium on “Addressing xenophobia in working with immigrants and international Students” with the Section on Ethnic & Racial Diversity and Section on College & University Counseling Centers.

5-6pm: We will co-sponsor the Division 17 Student Poster session. Three posters were accepted by our Section.

August 5, 2015

9-10am: We will sponsor a symposium on “From an international trainee to an independent practitioner” with the Section for the Independent Practice.

10-11am: Our International Psychology Practitioner Committee will hold a meeting on “Immigration Challenges for International Practitioners” for practitioners in United States with international backgrounds.

2-4pm: Three international psychology networks—Korean, Japanese, and Taiwan Psychology Networks—will hold a Joint Networks Meeting in the Hospitality Suite. 

August 6, 2015

8-9am: We will hold our Section Business Meeting for our members and anyone who is interested in joining and being involved in our Section.
