Congratulations to Dr. Silvia Sara Canetto for receiving the 2018 Denmark Reuder AwardSilvia Sara Canetto, Ph.D., Fellow of the Society for Counseling Psychology, is the recipient of the American Psychological Association’s (APA) 2018 Denmark Reuder Award. This APA Division of International Psychology’s award recognizes outstanding international contributions to the psychology of women and gender. Dr. Canetto has a sustained record as a leader and an innovator in education, research, and service related to women and gender internationally. As an educator she has always taught her classes from a global perspective—even when such perspective was uncommon in psychology. She has mentored generations of students in international women and gender research, and inspired many of them to pursue international gender work. Many of her students received awards for the gender and culture research they did under her supervision. Her scholarship on cultural scripts of gender and suicide has been described as path breaking and transformative of a field, suicidology, that is very U.S.-centric and medical model-oriented. Her research on cultural scripts of gender and science and engineering, which has been funded by the National Science Foundation, has also challenged dominant U.S. paradigms, including the myth that women choose motherhood over science. Furthermore, her work on women’s human rights has been praised for its impact on the profession. In addition to her publications on women’s human rights, she has led the writing of a resolution on women’s human rights for APA’s Committee on International Relations. International issues are central to Dr. Canetto’s personal experiences. She is immigrant to the United States, where she came by herself for a third graduate degree. Her transnational journey includes four years in Israel, where she went as a post-doc with sponsorship from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She now speaks all of the languages she knows with accent–English, French, Spanish, Hebrew, and her mother tongue, Italian. Dr. Canetto received many recognitions for her gender and social justice work, locally and internationally, for example, APA’s Society for the Psychology of Women’s Strickland Henderson-Daniel Distinguished Mentoring Award; Metro State College of Denver’s Morrow Endowed Lectureship for outstanding contributions to women’s psychology, human diversity education, and the promotion of social justice; and CSU’s Women’s Studies Boyer Memorial Endowed Lecture. Dr. Canetto is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, and the Gerontological Society of America. Dr. Canetto is a Professor of Psychology at Colorado State University’s (CSU) Department of Psychology, where she is core faculty in the Counseling-Psychology and in the Applied-Social-and-Health-Psychology programs. At CSU she also has Affiliate Status in the Center for Women’s Studies and Gender Research, in the International Development Studies Program, and in the Human-Development-and-Family-Studies Department. She is also an Affiliate Faculty in the Psychology Doctoral Program of the Escuela de Postgrado at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, Lima, Perú.
