Members of the Division 17 Awards and Recognition Committee and members of the Executive Board may make nominations. However, if they do so, they must withdraw from the voting process related to any nominee for whom they have written a letter of support. Announcement of all award winners is made at the annual APA Convention (all award recipients are notified confidentially prior to the convention). Current members of the Division 17 Executive Board are not eligible for these awards during their term of office. 


 

GENERAL NOMINATION MATERIALS:

Nominations should include and be limited to the following:

(a) a nomination letter indicating the significance of the nominee’s contributions and achievements as these relate to the

award criteria; (b) no more than three supporting letters from other psychologists; and, (c) a copy of the nominee’s vita. Additional materials for particular awards are noted below.

AWARD DESCRIPTIONS & CRITERIA

THE LEONA TYLER AWARD rewards distinguished contributions in research or professional achievement in counseling psychology. The Award – the Society’s most prestigious – honors this former President of both the Society and the American Psychological Association.

THE JOHN HOLLAND AWARD for Outstanding Achievement in Career and Personality Research is given for notable research on career and personality topics. This award is for mid- level professionals who have received their doctoral degrees between 10 and 20 years ago. The award has an associated monetary prize funded by Psychological Assessment Resources, Inc.

THE JOHN D. BLACK AWARD for Outstanding Achievement in the Practice of Counseling Psychology rewards outstanding achievement in the practice of counseling psychology. The monetary prize associated with the award is donated by Consulting Psychologists Press, Inc.

THE FRITZ AND LINN KUDER EARLY CAREER SCIENTIST/PRACTITIONER AWARD was established to honor early career achievements in science and practice. The recipient must have received the doctoral degree within the past ten years (i.e., 2001 or later). The award, which includes a monetary prize from SCP, is made for outstanding contributions to the science and practice of counseling psychology.

THE DOROTHY BOOZ BLACK AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN COUNSELING HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY encourages and awards outstanding research and practice in counseling health psychology. The award has an associated monetary prize, funded by Consulting Psychologist Press, Inc. Nominees must have made a primary contribution in the research and practice of counseling health psychology focused on health-related processes and outcomes.

THE SOCIAL JUSTICE AWARD is given to a living SCP member* with a degree in counseling psychology or demonstrated identity as a counseling psychologist. Nominees must have a sustained commitment to counseling psychology, community involvement, and diversity, as well as demonstrated evidence of achieving community or organizational change that supports disenfranchised, disempowered, less privileged, or oppressed groups. This commitment to social justice also must provide a larger impact on practice, research, and scholarship in the field. The associated monetary award is funded by the editors of The Handbook of Social Justice in Counseling Psychology.

*The award also may be given to a small group whose collaborative work meets the spirit of the award (and in which case the lead nominee must meet all criteria above).

Social Justice Award nomination materials: Nomination letters should describe the significance of the nominee’s contributions relevant to the award criteria. No more than three supporting letters of endorsement should be sent from stakeholders connected to the social justice work of the individual(s) being nominated. Nominations also should include: (1) nominee’s current vita; (2) documentation from other sources (e.g., newspaper articles, workshop brochures, publications) that indicate widespread awareness or recognition of the nominee’s (or small group’s) contributions; and, (3) a brief essay (1-2 pages, written by either the nominator or nominee) summarizing the nominee’s (or small group’s) work for social justice and how this work meets the criteria for the Social Justice Award. Members of the Awards and Recognition Committee also may collect relevant information regarding the nominee(s).

Other Report

The Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award acknowledges career contributions to Counseling Psychology via excellence in mentoring. This award is for professionals who have provided mentoring throughout their careers. 


SCP STUDENT AWARDS

THE BARBARA A. KIRK AWARD is presented in recognition of outstanding student-initiated research (dissertation or other). The award, which includes a cash award, was established to honor the late Barbara A. Kirk. To be eligible, a graduate student must conduct and produce independent research while enrolled in a counseling psychology program. The research can be submitted up to one year after graduation. The nominee must be the principal author of the research. Nominations should include (and be limited to) the following:

(1) a nomination letter discussing the significance of the nominee’s contributions to counseling psychology; and (2) either a full length manuscript in APA style (as one would submit for publication), a published article, or an 1,800 word summary of the research (as one would submit for an APA convention proposal).

THE DONALD E. SUPER FELLOWSHIP is awarded to support dissertation research on a topic related to career development and is accompanied by a cash award. Only doctoral students enrolled in counseling psychology programs are eligible. Because the Fellowship is intended to support recipients during their tenure as students, the anticipated completion date for the dissertation should not fall before the award date (i.e., at the annual convention of APA). Nominations should include (and be limited to) the following: (1) a nomination letter discussing the significance of the nominee’s contributions to counseling psychology; (2) an APA-style (6th edition) formatted version of the student’s dissertation proposal not to exceed 30 pages; and (3) an approval of the proposal signed by the dissertation committee members. The Fellowship will be awarded based on the quality of the dissertation proposal and its potential for advancing knowledge in the area of career development.
