2017 Great Lakes Regional Counseling Psychology Conference

The 2017 Great Lakes Regional Counseling Psychology Conference is firmly rooted in the history of counseling psychology, while recognizing the importance of taking ACTION through science, practice, and social change activities. This is the 29th Anniversary of the Great Lakes Regional Counseling Psychology Conference. The keynote address will be given by Martin Heesacker, SCP/D17 President and is entitled “Counseling Psychology in the Trump Era.”

Undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend and submit poster, paper, symposium, and roundtable proposals. Questions can be directed to: [email protected].

SCP Elections in April

Look for your ballot electronically from APA to vote in the SCP elections, on or following April 15, 2017. You will have an opportunity to read candidates’ statements before voting. For those who receive a paper ballot, a website address will be provided on the ballot so that candidates’ statements can be read online.

2017 APA Annual Conference Registration Opens Monday, April 17

Registration for the APA Annual Convention, August 3 – 6, opens Monday, April 17. At this time, you can book your housing, in addition to completing your registration. Soon after, the SCP headquarters hotel will be known, although most meetings will take place at the Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church, as they have in the past. APA Marching for Science – April 22, 2017

APA is marching for science on Saturday, April 22 2017. APA will provide a meeting place for psychologists and their friends and family who plan to attend the march in Washington. If you can’t make it to D.C., you can still march at one of several hundred announced satellite marches. As a prelude to the march, APA will offer advocacy training on Friday, April 21, noon EDT, at its Washington, D.C., headquarters. The training session, “Beyond the March: Advocating for Psychological Science,” will focus on how to communicate effectively with policymakers about the importance of psychological research and evidence-based policy. The APA endorsed the Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Clients (2016) in 2015, and there are ample opportunities to infuse the use of the guidelines in psychological education, teaching, practice, research, and advocacy. Presenters discuss these opportunities, with a special focus on how supervisors and supervisees can work together to make their training sites trans-affirmative and culturally-responsive.
